4.25-Tonne Electric Van MOT Rules from June 2026

From 1 June 2026, qualifying zero-emission goods vehicles with a design gross weight between 3,501kg and 4,250kg moved into Class 7 MOT testing in Great Britain.

The change affects heavier electric vans that may previously have followed heavy vehicle testing arrangements because their batteries pushed them above the traditional 3.5-tonne van threshold.

For fleet managers, the practical questions are straightforward: which vehicles are affected, when is the first Class 7 MOT due, and what inspection standards now apply?

Which electric vans are covered?

The change applies to zero-emission goods vehicles with a design gross weight from 3,501kg to 4,250kg.

Design gross weight is the maximum weight the vehicle is designed to operate at, including the vehicle, driver, passengers, fuel or battery, tools and load. It is normally shown on the manufacturer's plate or vehicle identification plate.

The rule is specifically for zero-emission vehicles. The DVSA MOT special notice says this does not include hybrid vehicles, including range extenders that use petrol, diesel or LPG for propulsion or battery charging.

Electric vans at or below 3,500kg already follow the normal testing arrangements for their class. Vehicles above 4,250kg may fall under different requirements, so operators should confirm the position for each vehicle.

When is the first Class 7 MOT due?

Qualifying vehicles have their first Class 7 MOT three years after they are registered.

After that first test, they follow the applicable Class 7 testing schedule. Managers should check each vehicle's registration date and current official MOT record rather than relying on a date held in an old spreadsheet or calendar.

This is particularly important for vehicles that previously had a heavy vehicle test. A historic test record does not change the new classification, but the transition can make dates look unfamiliar. Check the current position through GOV.UK or with DVSA if a record appears unclear.

Where can a 4.25-tonne electric van be tested?

The change gives affected fleets access to Class 7 MOT stations rather than limiting them to heavy vehicle testing facilities.

DVSA states that Class 7 testing stations must accept qualifying zero-emission goods vehicles between 3,500kg and 4,250kg design gross weight. The station still needs suitable equipment and must be able to test the vehicle safely.

If the van is presented fully or partly loaded and its weight is uncertain, the tester can request evidence of its weight or measure it using suitable test equipment. A tester may decline the test if the presented weight means it cannot be tested safely. Operators should therefore confirm the station's capability and prepare the vehicle before the appointment.

The tyre tread requirement changes

One operational detail deserves particular attention: the minimum tyre tread depth for these vehicles changes from 1.0mm to 1.6mm under the Class 7 standards.

That should be reflected in:

  • Driver walkaround-check guidance
  • Maintenance inspection standards
  • Tyre replacement thresholds
  • Defect assessment and close-out decisions
  • Information given to drivers and fitters

Waiting until a tyre reaches the legal minimum is rarely a sensible maintenance policy. Fleets should set an intervention point that gives enough time to arrange replacement before the vehicle becomes non-compliant.

Speed limiters remain part of the test

The MOT special notice says current Class 7 standards apply with the addition of speed-limiter checks under the relevant inspection-manual section.

Managers should make sure speed-limiter systems and warning indicators are included in maintenance conversations for affected vehicles. If a warning light, damaged component or suspected fault is identified, it should be assessed by a competent person rather than ignored until the MOT.

What fleet managers should do

Start with a vehicle-level review:

  1. Identify every zero-emission goods vehicle between 3,501kg and 4,250kg design gross weight.
  2. Confirm that the vehicle is fully zero-emission rather than hybrid or range-extender.
  3. Record its first-registration date.
  4. Check the current MOT position using the official GOV.UK service.
  5. Confirm the next test date and identify a suitable Class 7 testing station.
  6. Update tyre standards and driver guidance to reflect the 1.6mm minimum.
  7. Review any speed-limiter requirements and warning indicators.
  8. Keep the appointment, result and follow-up work with the vehicle's maintenance record.

Do not apply one date or assumption to the whole electric fleet. Similar-looking vans can have different weights, registration dates and testing histories.

Keep daily roadworthiness checks separate from the MOT

An MOT is a test of the vehicle at a point in time. It does not replace daily driver checks, planned maintenance or defect reporting.

Drivers should still check tyres, lights, mirrors, glass, bodywork, warning lights, doors, brakes and any other relevant equipment before use. Any safety defect should be reported and assessed, and an unroadworthy vehicle should not return to service until the business is satisfied that the problem has been rectified.
